One of the most common New Year’s Resolutions I have come across is “Read more”. A lot of us would read a lot more, if only we had the time, or if only we did not have to do ‘x y z’.

I get it.

Until a few years back, this was me. Until I discovered that, I was letting go of many pockets of time. There was time, so much of it — if only I paid attention.

Self-care has come to represent a host of things. ‘Treat yourself’ is an often-repeated slogan thrown at us from advertisements and billboards around the globe, selling us self-care.

These campaigns suggest everything from body lotions and bath bombs to expensive clothing and luxury watches, all with the promise of making us feel better about ourselves.

However, buying these material items cannot help if you are unhappy inside. At best, it can give you fleeting pleasure, but it will not deliver long-lasting happiness.

Growing old really does seem to be a trick of fate. There are stories of people who live full fruitful lives well into their nineties. On the other hand, we have people who have not done so well while ageing.
